France Final Hazards Report      France's biggest hazards that we should be worried about is the global warming and heat waves of France. This impacts farmers, ecosystems, land, animals, and most importantly our Earth. These changes are being caused by humans ourselves. With the most recent and biggest drought in France, this past summer of 2022 impacted France like no other. With heavy wildfires and low rainfall, this is only the start of global warming. Many scientists are starting to see that the future could be heavily impacted by the greenhouse gas emissions and pollution which is the main cause towards heatwaves and hotter summers. I am addressing this as the number one priority because this is an issue that is not only impacting the country of France but globally. The warming of our Earth is being caused by us ourselves; the consequences of our actions are the result of wildfires and droughts. These droughts are the ones drying up lake...

Week 10- Extreme weather

Image
Extreme Weather in France  There has been a concern about the extreme weather in France due a rising worry about Climate Change. Believe it or not, many scientists have argued that climate change has been affecting every country over the past years. France has been one of them that has been suffering from high tides, hot summers and extreme temperatures. One of the heat waves that had affected France the most was the Europe 2019 Heat Wave which reached to temperatures of over 104 degrees Fahrenheit.       France has been set on a 2050 carbon neutral target which has kept the emissions low and have trued to mitigate the risks associated with global warming. Many citizens have complained about climate changed claiming, " This summer, three of the main risks associated with global warming have materialized: risks to health and ecosystems on land and at sea due to extreme heat; water shortages; and the loss of agricultural yields. The fourth, yet to come, is t...

Mass Wasting in France

Image
Week 8: Landslides and mass wasting hazards in France  Mass wasting and landslides in France have threatened hundreds of people and lives who live near the European Alp Mountains making it one of the tallest bordering France, Italy, Switzerland, etc. Landslides in France have mostly been by the Alp Mountains when there is snow or heavy rain. The most although surprisingly have been recorded during the summer and spring; was a total of 2966. The most deadliest landslide from the Alp Mountains was in 1982 where Barcelonnette in the southern of France had faced a landslide of 6 million of earths materials which had threatened 170 community housings. This was also called La Valette and known as the worst in France. The country has established many engineering solutions which could potentially prevent the mudslides as well.  The most recent landslides occurred in 2019 during the European storms and heavy rain which caused 9 deaths. There were 4 who had died on the French Rivi...

Week 5: Volcanoes in France

Image
France Volcanoes           France is not all huge cities and small colorful towns filled with French people. Beautiful lands made up of mountains and lakes/rivers is what makes up 15% of France. The Massif Central In France is home too many inactive volcanoes dating back to the Tertiary and Quaternary Epochs. The most popular extinct volcanoes are the Chain des Puys which is 80 monogenetic volcanoes dated back to the ice age which are now formed into domes. Monogenetic volcanoes refer to a one and only eruption. These volcanoes erupted back in 4040 BCE which created the 15 explosion craters, 8 lava domes and 48 cinder cones.      The most active volcanoes of France consist of Mountage Pelee which is located in Martinique, an island of France. This active stratovolcano which formed from the major layers of hardened lava is one of the most deadliest type. This volcano had erupted...

Week 3: Earthquakes in France?

Image
France is not known for major earthquakes like it is in the U.S. While there are no active fault-lines, the last major recorded earthquake was in 2019 having a magnitude of 4.8. The picture shows the zones where earthquakes are more bound to occur and hit the hardest. The earthquake of 2019 did make the people of France evacuate but there have been 10 deaths due to earthquakes since 1950. The last recorded major earthquake was in 2006 with a magnitude of 4.7! Must be nice to not have to worry about earthquakes.  The people of France are alerted through sirens in case of any natural disaster. This could be anything from an earthquake to a Tsunami and can also be alerted from their phones to send a message to make sure everyone is okay.  Sources: http://ds.iris.edu/seismon/index.phtml https://www.esa.int/Applications/Observing_the_Earth/Copernicus/Sentinel-1/French_earthquake_fault_mapped

Week 2: France Tectonic plates

Image
France is located on the Eurasian Tectonic plate which is made up on micro plates making France more born to minor earthquakes. France is not located next to a boundary with no volcano eruption hotspots. Usually France gets minor earthquakes which are rare to big ones such as ones from the San Andreas Fault.            France is also on a side of the Mediterranean Sea which covers all 3 of complex tectonics of lithospheric plates which are Eurasia, Nubia, and Arabia.  Sources: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/17824/active-tectonics-of-the-mediterranean-region-and-surrounding-areas https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/article/weird-earthquake-crack-france-geologists-buzzing https://earthhow.com/7-major-tectonic-plates/
