Week 5: Volcanoes in France

 France Volcanoes

France is not all huge cities and small colorful towns filled with French people. Beautiful lands made up of mountains and lakes/rivers is what makes up 15% of France. The Massif Central In France is home too many inactive volcanoes dating back to the Tertiary and Quaternary Epochs. The most popular extinct volcanoes are the Chain des Puys which is 80 monogenetic volcanoes dated back to the ice age which are now formed into domes. Monogenetic volcanoes refer to a one and only eruption. These volcanoes erupted back in 4040 BCE which created the 15 explosion craters, 8 lava domes and 48 cinder cones.

The most active volcanoes of France consist of Mountage Pelee which is located in Martinique, an island of France. This active stratovolcano which formed from the major layers of hardened lava is one of the most deadliest type. This volcano had erupted in 1902 going over 350 meters above the crater rim creating a pyroclastic current killing about 30,000 people and destroying the city of Saint Pierre. The image below shows the remains of Saint Pierre after the deadly volcanic eruption.

France has an FR Alert which alarms the people of their country in case of any natural disaster. This is the same system us Americans have when we receive an Amber Alert. In the case of Volcanic eruptions, I do think there are ways that we can survive them, in this case of the Mount Pelee eruption, the smoky clouds before the eruption is a signal that it can erupt and is a sign of evacuation.

  2. Hello there Claudia!
I am going to be honest here, it came to me as a total surprise to find that France even had volcanos. It honestly it was the last thing I would have even thought of since I learned more about te the culture and a bit of its history. It is also kind of worrisome to learn that there is an active stratovolcano, and it is considered to be the deadliest type. I am also curious, but I wonder if the volcano has been active again since the eruption back in 1902. Being that the volcanic eruption ended up being so deadly I was hoping that a more up to date procedures are present or to even prevent the great number of deaths from occurring again. Although the picture is from a devastating time, I do like that you provided an image after the volcanic eruption had taken place. Thank you for the picture provided and also for the good read. Cheers!
