Mass Wasting in France

Week 8: Landslides and mass wasting hazards in France

Mass wasting and landslides in France have threatened hundreds of people and lives who live near the European Alp Mountains making it one of the tallest bordering France, Italy, Switzerland, etc. Landslides in France have mostly been by the Alp Mountains when there is snow or heavy rain. The most although surprisingly have been recorded during the summer and spring; was a total of 2966. The most deadliest landslide from the Alp Mountains was in 1982 where Barcelonnette in the southern of France had faced a landslide of 6 million of earths materials which had threatened 170 community housings. This was also called La Valette and known as the worst in France. The country has established many engineering solutions which could potentially prevent the mudslides as well.

The most recent landslides occurred in 2019 during the European storms and heavy rain which caused 9 deaths. There were 4 who had died on the French Riviera which included a 70 year old couple and many had been submerged in water. Heavy rain is also the cause of many landslides/mudslides that are caused in France and have been studying the result of climate change from it. Many know landslides are almost always unpredictable due to the recent changes of Earth and climate change.

Below is a picture of La Valette which it still considered life threatening to citizens living under from it.

  1. Hi Claudia. I enjoyed reading your blog post this week. The landslides that have occurred in France sound so scary. I can't even imagine being in and experiencing one. Hopefully France can put some precautions into place where bad landslides happen to deter damage and injuries. Thank you for an informative post!

You have a very informative blog on mass wasting in France. Its insane how a landslide could threaten 170 housing communities! Do you know if there are any safety precautions put into place considering historical landslides in France?
    Thank you for your post!
